Thompson"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"p_embed p_image_embed\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/casey.com\/blog\/images\/hunter.jpg\" align=\"right\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Very sad news tonight. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hunter_Thompson\">Hunter S. Thompson<\/a> was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 67 years old.<\/p>\n<p>I am a huge fan of Thompson&#8217;s work. I can remember my first introduction to it, when my brother read me passages from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?tag=caseyblog-20&amp;path=ASIN\/0679785892\/qid=1108966627\/sr=2-4\/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_4\/\">Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas<\/a>. That introduction let me to move from one book to the next. You really couldn&#8217;t go wrong with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?tag=caseyblog-20&amp;path=tg\/listmania\/list-browse\/-\/L6JANN4E89Z\/ref=amb_right-1_184863_3\/\">any of his books<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Of all of them, I most appreciate his volumes of letters, particularly the first volume, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?tag=caseyblog-20&amp;path=tg\/detail\/-\/0679406956\/qid=1108967104\/sr=1-11\/ref=sr_1_11\/%3Fv=glance&amp;s=books\">The Proud Highway<\/a>. A tireless correspondent, the letters introduced me to a young Thompson, who would eagerly engage friends and strangers in thoughtful and funny letters that he carefully maintained copies of, knowing that someday even they would be a worthy read for a larger audience.<\/p>\n<p>Once, while I was at UC Santa Barbara in 1986, Thompson visited our campus for a lecture. The event was a sell-out and I had no ticket, but since my job on campus was as a projectionist, I was able to worm my way into watching from the rear projection booth. With his Dunhill hanging from a cigarette holder, and a glass of Wild Turkey, he gladly entertained questions from students in the packed auditorium. It was great.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson said, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikiquote.org\/wiki\/Hunter_S._Thompson\">When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro<\/a>&#8220;.
