I&#8217;ve always avoided it, fearing some kind of hacker lure, like the witch&#8217;s house of candy in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hansel_and_Gretel\">Hansel and Gretel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Happily today, a path of blog entries (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyperorg.com\/blogger\/2008\/01\/31\/free-public-wifi-explained\/\">Joho<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/pogue.blogs.nytimes.com\/2008\/01\/29\/free-public-wifi\/\">Pogue<\/a>) led to the answer, posted more than a year ago <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.chron.com\/techblog\/archives\/2006\/09\/free_public_wif.html\">here in Tech Blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The answer?  A Windows bug.
